Overview
Labor Rules determine how staffing is generated for a job code based on forecasted labor drivers and business requirements.
Before creating Labor Rules, you must first create a Labor Rule Set. Rule Sets allow you to configure Labor Rules once and apply them across multiple locations.
For instructions on creating a Rule Set, see HS ASC: Creating Labor Rule Sets.
Creating Labor Rules
Follow these steps to create a Labor Rule for a job code:
- Open the appropriate Labor Rule Set.
- Under Configured Job Codes, select Add a Job Code.
- Select the job code you want to configure.
4. Select Add a Rule.
5.Choose the Rule Type you want to create.
6. (Optional) Enter a custom description.
7. Select Add.
Note: Labor Rules of different rule types can overlap. Multiple rules of the same rule type cannot overlap during the same time period.
Configure the Rule Schedule
After selecting a Rule Type, define when the rule should apply.
Choose one of the following scheduling methods.
Fixed Hours
Use Fixed Hours when the rule should always apply during specific times of the day, regardless of the location's operating hours.
Example:
- 10:00 AM–4:00 PM
- 4:00 PM–10:00 PM
This option is commonly used for job codes that work consistent schedules, such as Prep Cooks.
Operating Hours
Use Operating Hours when the rule should adjust automatically based on each location's business hours.
For example, a rule can apply:
- 1 hour before opening
- 5 hours after opening
- 1 hour before closing
This option is ideal for organizations where locations have different operating hours.
Note: Business Hours must be configured for each location before Operating Hours can be used.
Configure Rule Details
After defining the schedule, configure how staffing should be generated for the selected Rule Type.
The following Rule Types are available:
Base Volume Rule
Creates a minimum staffing level regardless of forecasted volume.
This rule is commonly used to ensure essential positions are always staffed, even when forecasted sales are low.
Standard Multiple Rule
Generates staffing based on projected Labor Drivers, such as Guests, Tables, or Entrées.
For example:
Schedule one Busser for every 10 Guests between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Hourly Modifier Rule
Adds staffing when projected Labor Driver counts exceed a specified threshold during a defined timeframe.
This rule is commonly used to supplement an existing Standard Multiple Rule during peak business periods.
Silverware Roller Rule
Generates labor based on projected silverware rolling requirements and the estimated time required to complete each roll.
Fixed Hour Multiple Rule
Creates staffing based on a fixed Labor Driver multiple during a specified time period.
This rule also supports minimum and maximum staffing values.
Dual Multiple Rule
Generates staffing using two separate Labor Driver multiples within a single rule.
This is useful when staffing requirements are influenced by multiple forecast sources.
Preview a Labor Rule
If Preview is enabled, you can review the projected impact of your Labor Rule before saving it.
To preview a rule:
- Select Preview Rule Set.
- Select the location.
- Choose one or more historical weeks.
- Select Run Preview.
The preview displays:
