How are segments and categories used?

​Categories

A category is a group of similar outlets, products, recipes, or projects.

Categories are used as selection criteria for reports. A category has one or more category segments, one or more category classifications, and one or more sub categories.

Category Segments

A category segment is the part of a property to which a category is applicable. A category segment can have more than one category. Typically, customers have category segments such as Food & Beverage, Housekeeping, and Engineering.

@Mark Whitmore​ Thank you for your answer, Mark. This makes the system a little clearer to me. I have a follow up question, however: Can a category apply to more than one category segment? For example, if there was an Operating Supplies category, could it apply to both Food and Beverage and Housekeeping?

The reason I ask is because I am trying to clean up our categories, and there are multiple instances of products being used in 3 - 4 outlets (such as bottled water).

A category can only be part of a single category segment.

If you are looking and starting a project to clean up parts of the system I recommend you contact your Fourth representative to arrange a conversation prior to doing so as changing the system will have an impact.
