What situations do you create separate Product Details instead of separate Products?

Hi {@005D000000AEQ9rIAH}
It is important to note that many of our customers utilize details vs. products in different ways depending on their business requirements. If you would like advice on this, please check with your Fourth contact.
As a general best practice, if an item (Olive Oil) can be used interchangeably in recipes then it can be created as a new detail under the same product – as is the case here with the Olive Oil, i.e. it doesn’t matter whether the 1L (regardless of 24 or 12 per case) or 1 Gal is picked up when in the kitchen because there is no specification or quality difference.
A new product would be created if the item is used in a different way to the alternative sized item is, i.e tomato ketchup used in the kitchen is ordered in a 1 litre bottle but also ordered in small jars of 50ml for the restaurant. The two items are not used interchangeably in recipes so are normally created as different products.
Hope that helps!
