How to add an ingredient that has varying weight for example a turkey that can come in size 4.75 - 5.25kg

    Hi Lyndsey,

    Thanks for the question - if the item has variable weight it is potentially best to set up the ingredient with the size in the name i.e. Turkey (4.75 - 5.25kg) with a supply quantity of 1kg and the unit size of the same measure. The user orders 1 Turkey, by entering 1 in the quantity box when ordering, and when receipting the goods they adjust the quantity of the turkey to the specific weight i.e. 5.1 kg. This ensures that you have the correct volume of Turkey in stock. The key part is ensuring that the suppliers is simply looking at the quantity of the Product code ordered (which they usually do).

    Thank you for your response, I have set the turkey up as below, if I change this to 1 x 1kg as supply qty do I also need to change the unit size as 1kg? Do I need to do anything with the price?

    Hi Lyndsey,

     

    The price needs to reflect the supply quantity i.e. the per per kg rather than for the whole turkey. The unit size can remain as 5kg but when counting the users will have to tell the system how many '5kg's' they have of the turkey's which can be tricky to explain an understand from a user perspective therefore we would advise that the unit size is in 1kg which is simple for the user, as they can just weigh the Turkey's appropriately.

    I have updated the Turkey ingredient as below & amended the price accordingly for 1kg, however the system will not allow me to change the Unit Size which is what you have advised I need to do.

     

    Can you advise on this please?

    Hi Lindsey,

     

    Yes the unit size not editable once the ingredient is in use (i.e. used in a recipe or published to Inventory). In this case you are not able to change the unit size, this is not a requirement, but makes it easier for the users. If you do want to change the unit size a new ingredient will need to be created (you will need to add XX after the product code of the current item) then create the new item and complete a find & replace within recipes and publish to Inventory. Apologies if I caused some confusion.
